Getting Started with Home Care

Your path to care starts with a conversation

Reaching out for help can feel like a big step, especially when you’re caring for someone you love. We’ve made getting started simple, unhurried, and free of pressure. There’s no obligation and no commitment to begin — just an honest conversation about what your family needs and how we can help.

How Getting Started Works

1

Let us know about your family

Every family’s situation is different, and we want to understand yours. Tell us what’s been happening, what your loved one needs, and what’s on your mind — including schedules, routines, concerns, and any insurance or funding questions. It helps us confirm we’re the right fit. We’re here to listen, not to rush you toward a decision.

2

We come to you

A Butterfly care coordinator visits your home to meet your loved one, understand their routines, and learn what matters most to them and to your family. Where your care needs or funding source call for it, we’ll complete a more detailed assessment to confirm the right level and amount of support.

3

Together, we build a care plan that fits

Using everything we’ve learned, we create a person-centered care plan matched to your loved one’s needs, preferences, and goals. We also help navigate funding options like Medicaid waivers so cost doesn’t stand in the way of the right care.

4

Care begins with people you can trust

Your caregiver is introduced before services officially begin, so your loved one has a chance to get comfortable first. From the very first visit we check in with your family to make sure everything feels right — and we keep the match working through routine visits and check-ins over time.

Who's Coming Into Your Home

For most families, the hardest part isn’t deciding to get help; it’s trusting someone new with the person they love. We take that seriously.

Every Butterfly caregiver is our employee, not a contractor, which means they’re trained, supervised, and accountable to us, you’re never left to manage a private hire on your own. Before anyone is assigned to your family, they complete our Butterfly Certified Caregiver program, with training built specifically for supporting individuals with Autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and seniors. Every caregiver is background-checked and trained in CPR, First Aid, and emergency response before they set foot in a home.

And because familiarity matters, especially for individuals who rely on routine, we work to keep the same caregiver in place over time, and we handle any change carefully and with notice.

Paying for Care

Cost shouldn’t be the reason a family goes without support. We’re upfront about pricing before care begins — no hidden fees — and we help you explore every option you may qualify for:

  • Private pay — card, check, or direct payment
  • Long-term care insurance — we assist with billing and documentation
  • Veterans benefits — for eligible veterans and their spouses

Coverage and eligible programs vary by state and location. For the full breakdown, see our How to Pay page — or just ask, and we’ll help you figure out what’s available where you live.
